Ecoli Public Inquiry publishes final report

Professor Hugh Pennington published his report on 19 March 2009 into the major outbreak of E.coli O157 in South Wales in September 2005.

The final report of the E.coli Public Inquiry sets out the finding of an examination into the circumstances behind the outbreak and the way it was handled, including the handling of meat in businesses, abattoirs and the supply of meat for school meals. He examines the contract monitoring and mechanisms for outbreak control.

He makes 24 recommendations aimed at food businesses, inspection of businesses to ensure compliance, and food procurement.  He requests that the National Assembly for Wales monitor the implementation of the recommendations and recommends a review, which should not be a public inquiry, to take place in approximately five years time.

"We owe it to the memory of Mason Jones to learn the lessons from this outbreak and to remember them" Professor Hugh Pennington
